Why I am interested in learning Japanese!

I have always been interested in other languages. Growing up in New York City I was exposed to many unique cultures. On the subway and walking around outside I heard many different languages each day. Once I started school I studied Spanish from grade school through high school. When I got to college I was interested in starting a new language, specifically one that was not considered to be one of the romance languages. Also, my best friend from high school was Japanese and I often heard the language while spending time at her family's hair salon in midtown and at their home. Spending time with my friend and her family fostered in me a love for the language and culture of Japan. Therefore, I decided to begin taking Japanese here at Columbia University.

    1. こんにちわかすみさん。I find reproducing Japanese characters difficult. It takes me a very long time to write. Also, because we have class four days a week there is always a lot of grammar to learn. How long have you been studying English?
